Claude Arthur Howard Jr., 77, president of Claude Howard Lumber, Statesboro, Ga., until his retirement in 1998, died April 29. Snavely Forest Products expanding to Houston
Snavely Forest Products, a leading wholesale distributor of building products, is opening a new division in Houston, Texas. This is the first expansion for Snavely Forest Products since they were acquired by Weekes Forest Products in February of 2018. The new location is expected to open in May.

Longtime Scotch Plywood sales manager dies
Francis Powell, 79, longtime sales manager at Scotch Plywood, Fulton, Ala., died March 30. He began his career in October 1965 in sales with Scotch Plywood, and later became plywood sales manager. Thomas H. Fahey, 89, a founder of North Star Forest Materials, St. Paul, Minn., died December 26. He had retired from the wood products industry in 1996 after a 33-year career.

Sierra Pacific Industries, Anderson, Calif., has announced that Harold Dodero has been appointed to the position of Sales Manager over the Structural Lumber Department. Dodero has 30 years of experience in the industry in both production and sales. He will succeed Dan Wolter, who is retiring at the end of the year after 23 years with the company and 45 years in the industry.

NLBMDA elects new leadership
The National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association (NLBMDA) elected its new leadership team at the ProDealer Industry Summit in Chicago, Illinois. At its annual meeting, the NLBMDA Board of Directors elected Robert P. Sanford as the new Chair of the association. Sanford is president of Connecticut-based Sanford and Hawley, and is replacing outgoing chair Rick Lierz, President and CEO of Franklin Building Supply in Boise, Idaho.

Seneca adds new VP-Manufacturing
Seneca, Eugene, Ore., announces and welcomes Chris Verderber to the newly created position of VP-Manufacturing. Alabama Gulf Manufacturing owner Mike Conwell dies
Mike Conwell, 68, died October 12 at his home in Spanish Fort, Ala. He was the owner of Alabama Gulf Manufacturing and spent nearly 50 years in the lumber industry, previously with Georgia-Pacific and Louisiana-Pacific.

Composite panel group elects new officers
The Composite Panel Association has elected members for its 2019 board. The new board was announced at the association's annual fall meeting and goes into effect on Jan. 1. Jake Elston of Arauco North America will serve as chairman, with Jim Buffington of Roseburg to serve as vice chairman and Pat Aldred of GP Wood Products as secretary/treasurer. B.C. government abruptly replaces top forestry official
The abrupt departure of the B.C. government’s top forestry official could signal a change in policy direction by Premier John Horgan and an expectation that turbulent times remain ahead for the sector. Tim Sheldan, the deputy minister of forests, lands, natural resource operations and rural development, was removed from the job on Monday by Don Wright, the head of the civil service and Premier John Horgan’s deputy minister. Sheldan’s replacement, John Allan, is a former senior bureaucrat from the 1990s NDP government who has since headed the forest sector’s top associations, served as the province’s chief negotiator on softwood lumber, and led a review on revitalizing B.C.’s coastal forest policies. Former Hampton Lumber trader Verne Church dies
Verne Church, longtime lumber salesman at Hampton Lumber, Portland, Ore., died this morning. He was 86. He started at Hampton Lumber in 1962. Although he retired in 1996, he frequently returned to cover vacation time for other traders at the company.

Wildwood Trading Group to begin in September
It’s been announced that Mike Phillips (formerly of Hampton Lumber Sales), Kevin Dodds and Grant Phillips (formerly of Collins) have formed a wholesale and distribution company to be called Wildwood Trading Group. The company will be headquartered in Tualatin, Ore., and will begin operations September 10. John Reger (previously with Pacific States Veneer) will join the company as Vice President of Operations and Aly Kingsley (formerly of Collins) will be Director of Administration. Jake Moriniti (sales representative) and Misty Dicks (Traffic Manager), both from Collins, will be aboard by the September 10 start date.

Weyerhaeuser CEO Simons to retire, Stockfish named successor
Weyerhaeuser Co. (WY) said that Doyle Simons has elected to retire, and its board of directors has appointed Devin Stockfish as president and chief executive officer, effective January 1, 2019. Stockfish, currently senior vice president of the company's Timberlands business, will join the company's board of directors on January 1, 2019, at which point Simons will step down from the board and become senior advisor until his retirement on April 1, 2019. Columbia Forest Products, Greensboro, N.C., today announced the appointment of Conrad Matthiessen as OEM sales manager for its new California-based rice straw MDF operation in partnership with CalPlant I, according to Columbia Director of MDF Sales Steve Chavez. Former Potlatch CEO John Richards dies
John Richards, former CEO and chairman of the board of Potlatch Corp., St. Maries, Idaho, died July 25. He was 81. He spent 29 years with Potlatch until his retirement in 1999. From the beginning of his career at Boise Cascade Company (Boise Cascade) (NYSE: BCC), Steve Stoler has been a trailblazer. Stoler will retire from his position as particleboard sales and marketing manager at Boise Cascade this August, marking the end of a 39-year career with the company. He started with Boise Cascade in 1979 when he was contacted to handle claims on rough sawn mahogany siding.

Buffington assumes responsibility for Roseburg's industrial business
Roseburg Forest Products has announced that Jim Buffington, Industrial Products Business Director, will immediately assume full responsibility for the Industrial Products business, with accountability for the sales, marketing and manufacturing of the company’s composite and hardwood plywood products. Oregon State dean of Forestry dies
Thomas Maness, dean of the College of Forestry at Oregon State University since 2012, died Thursday in Corvallis following a 2 1/2-year battle with an undisclosed illness. He was 63. Under Maness’ leadership, OSU was ranked the second-best college of forestry in the world in 2017 by the Center for World University Rankings, behind only the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala, Sweden. Kevin Rooney, formerly with Shuqualak Lumber Company and Scrimtec Industries, LTD, has joined Tri-State Forest Products in sales and market development for the central and east Tennessee regions. Rooney will relocate to the Greater Nashville area.

Parker named NAWLA Executive Director
NAWLA announced today that Scott Parker, MBA, CAE has been selected, and will begin as Executive Director on July 16. Scott is an executive with a successful track record of leading associations. He has over 15 years of senior level experience in management, business development and working with boards of directors. He currently serves as the associate executive director of the Water Quality Association. Prior to WQA, Scott served as the director of membership and career services at APICS - an association representing the supply chain and logistics industries. Needless to say, while he will hit the ground running to learn about the forest products industry, his previous experience is naturally transferrable to association management within our industry. We are confident Scott is the right choice to lead the NAWLA staff.

Roseburg is pleased to announce that Phil Odom has been named Business Director for Structural Products. Seneca Sawmills awards $10,000 scholarship
Aiden Stephan of Winter Lakes High School in Coquille, Ore., was awarded the $10,000 Seneca Scholarship on Friday, June 1 during his high school graduation. The Seneca Scholarship is awarded based on an essay contest. 553 high school seniors from around the state started the process of applying. 68 applicants completed the process. Jaye named procurement manager for new Rex Lumber mill
Alan H. Jaye was recently named procurement manager for Rex Lumber Co.’s new Alabama lumber manufacturing facility to be built near Troy. The $110 million state-of-the-art facility, slated to start up in mid-2019, will produce approximately 240 million board feet and create more than 110 jobs. Jaye’s 35-year career as a registered forester reflects broad technical knowledge and extensive business experience in all areas of professional forestry, including wood and fiber procurement, land management, resource sustainability, and environmental certification. Jaye served the past six years as procurement manager for Enviva Pellets, formerly Green Circle Bio-Energy, of Cottondale, Fla., which is the largest wood pellet facility of its kind.

Forest service chief resigns amid sexual misconduct investigation
The chief of the country's forestry agency has stepped down amid an investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct, the U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed to ABC News in a statement on Wednesday night. A PBS News investigation first reported allegations against Chief Tony Tooke related to relationships with subordinates prior to when he assumed his current role. The U.S. Forest Service confirmed last week that an independent investigator was looking into concerns about Tooke's behavior. In a memo to employees Tooke acknowledged the investigation and said he has been cooperating but that he decided to resign to do what is best for the agency. For more, click here...

A seasoned forest resources executive, Freeman joins Arkansas Wholesale after serving over 40 years in roles of increasing responsibility at various companies such as Sherwood, Futter, Cedar Creek, Allied Building Stores, PF O’Connor, Miron and Gerrity. Freeman will assume the duties from Brad Cunningham, who will continue his role as general manager, in supporting the company and leading the team of buyers at Arkansas Wholesale.

Softwood Lumber Board seeks candidates
The Softwood Lumber Board (SLB) seeks nominations of softwood lumber manufacturers and importers interested in candidacy for Board seats coming open in January 2019. Each Director will serve a three-year term, which may be renewed once. The deadline for nominations is April 20th, 2018. Jeld-Wen Holding, Inc. has announced a leadership transition with Chairman of the Board, Kirk S. Hachigian, assuming the duties of CEO on an interim basis. The company also announced an agreement to acquire American Building Supply, Inc. and A&L Windows Pty Ltd. Jeld-Wen Board of Directors announced the departure of President and CEO, Mark Beck, effective Feb. 27, by mutual agreement. Killgore named CEO of Timber Products
Timber Products Company today announced that its Board of Directors has appointed Steve Killgore as Chief Executive Officer. Roseburg Resources announces reorganization
As a result of several strategic developments within the company, including the recent sale of its California timberlands and purchase of 158,000 acres in Virginia and North Carolina, Roseburg Resources Co. has reviewed its organizational structure, leading to the promotion of three key managers to newly created director positions. Phil Adams, former Manager of Land and Timber, has been promoted to Director of Timberlands. WWPI elects new officers
The Western Wood Preservers Institute (WWPI) elected its 2018 executive officers during its 70th Annual General Meeting in Palm Springs, Calif. Long-term employee to lead timber company
Representatives of the 100-year-old Hill Family Trust based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, didn’t have to look far when it came time to select a new president of Cascade Timber Consulting, which manages the family’s 145,000 acres of timberland in east Linn County, Ore. In fact, their new leader will only have to move his office a few yards down the hallway of their Sweet Home office building. Linn County native Milt Moran, 64, has worked for Cascade Timber Consulting and its predecessors for 45 years, ever since the Lebanon High School graduate earned an associate’s degree in forest management at Central Oregon Community College in 1973. Roseburg chairman elected 2018 AWC chairman
The American Wood Council (AWC) today announced the election of Roseburg Forest Products Chairman Allyn Ford as the AWC chairman for a one-year term, effective in January 2018. Danny White, a director of T.R. Miller Mill Company, was elected the first vice-chairman, and Neil Sherman, executive vice president of siding at LP Corporation, was elected as second vice-chairman. Weyerhaeuser appoints Stockfish to timberlands position
Weyerhaeuser has appointed Devin Stockfish as senior vice president, Timberlands, effective January 1, 2018. He will replace Rhonda Hunter, who has elected to retire after 30 years with the company. Stockfish is vice president of Weyerhaeuser's Western Timberlands business. Prior to that role he was senior vice president and general counsel for the company. He joined Weyerhaeuser in 2013.

Hardman honored at APA meeting
Dennis Hardman, former president of APA – The Engineered Wood Association and longtime leader in the engineered wood industry, was honored with the Bronson J. Lewis Award at the APA Annual Meeting in Long Beach, California. The meeting took place October 28-31, 2017. The annual award is named after the late Bronson Lewis, who served for 24 years as secretary and then executive vice president of APA. The award recognizes individuals for their lifetime leadership and outstanding contribution to the industry.

SFPA elects new officers
The Southern Forest Products Association (SFPA) Board of Directors elected its 2018 slate of officers during its recent Annual Meeting in Bonita Springs, Florida. They are Chairman Donna Whitaker of Interfor U.S., Peachtree City, Georgia; Vice Chairman Steven Mason of Deltic Timber Corporation, El Dorado, Arkansas; Treasurer Donny White of Ray White Lumber Company, Sparkman, Arkansas. The Board also reelected Tami Kessler as Executive Director and William Almond of Almond Brothers Lumber Company in Coushatta, Louisiana, to serve as Immediate Past Chairman. The officers assume their duties immediately. “I look forward to continuing the legacy of this association, working with the excellent staff at SFPA,” Chairman Whitaker said. “Our association is a strong voice in the industry, and I hope to build on that strength as we continue activities through the coming year,” she added.

New leaders step up for NLBMDA
The National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association elected its new leadership team yesterday at the ProDealer Industry Summit. At the association's annual meeting, the NLBMDA board of directors elected Rick Lierz as the new chair of the association. Rick is president and CEO at Franklin Building Supply in Boise, Idaho, and is replacing outgoing chair George Lester II, chair and CEO at The Lester Group in Martinsville, Va.
