Email PDF Services

The email PDF service will allow you to print out the report from your computer printer. However, email subscribers to the complete versions of our newsletters may find it convenient to also subscribe to the mailed copy for a nominal extra charge, so that it can be easily and efficiently saved in your library. 

  Adobe Reader is free. You can download it from the Adobe website at: Get Adobe Reader (http://get.adobe.com/reader/).

Fax Services

Random Lengths Lumber, Panel, and Midweek reports are transmitted automatically to your fax machine. Subscribers receive their reports via an automated fax broadcast service. Subscribers must subscribe to the mailed, weekly Random Lengths report. Available only in the U.S. and Canada.

Spreadsheet and Database Services

Random Lengths offers its reports in spreadsheet and database formats, using email for delivery to your email address. Release times are the same as for the Fax services. Subscribers must subscribe to the mailed, weekly Random Lengths report. The spreadsheet and database formats allow a subscriber to easily manipulate the price guide information at their site, and are bundled with a separate ASCII text file containing the Market Commentaries. PLUS! Random Lengths Special Reports

Random Lengths Special Reports carry important, late-breaking news to decision makers in the marketplace. All subscribers to the Lumber, Panel and Midweek Random Lengths Market Reports receive accurate reports of important developments as soon as they occur.

The Random Lengths Market Reports include the prices and market commentary. Email PDF files include a special feature called UPS AND DOWNS.  This is a second copy of the price pages, with the price change from the previous week shown. Subscribers to the Lumber, Panel, and Midweek Market Reports must subscribe to the full 12-page Random Lengths Report by postal or email PDF delivery.

What computer file formats are available through Random Lengths’ XLS and DBF email service?

The format transmitted for the spreadsheet XLS service is: MS Excel v5.0 spreadsheet. The formats transmitted for the database DBF service are: DBase III (DBF), and Comma Separated Values (CSV) format files.

  • Due to customer demand, starting with Price Guide Changes the week of October 1, 2012, the database distribution files began transmitting with Comma Separated Values (CSV) format files in addition to the DBase III (DBF) format files. The benefit of the CSV format is that as a plain text file, it is more widely supported by a greater variety of applications.
  • The DBase III (DBF) format file will be discontinued during a Price Guide Revision cycle in 2013.
  • To help with the transition, you will be receiving both DBase III format (dbf) files and Comma Separated Values (CSV) files each week. You will receive advance notification in 2013 about when the DBF file format will be discontinued.

Random Lengths Item Code Key

The Random Lengths Item Code Key files are available to download (or Save As) and view as XLS and PDF files. These files have the same design as the printed price reports, but contain item codes in place of prices.

  • Random Lengths Item Code Key - Adobe Acrobat PDF format (PDF) (RL_Tags.pdf)

When you create references from the Random Lengths spreadsheets to your own, custom spreadsheets, use labels instead of cell locations. That way, your spreadsheet links will still work properly if there were revisions to the Random Lengths Spreadsheet. Database users can also use this key, along with the database description file, as an easy reference for item locations, since they appear in the same position as on the printed report.

Database Description Files

The Lumber Database Description File  and Panel Database Description File  in Comma Separated Values (CSV) format is also available to download (or Save As) and view. These cross-reference tables contain complete text and key-word descriptions for all price guide labels. The Midweek prices are included in the Lumber and Panel Database Description Files.

Database Support Tables

Database subscribers please note: Support tables are available in Microsoft Access format on request.  We're making the support tables used to expand the field codes, including the query used to concatenate the Short, Medium and Long descriptions, available in Access format on request.

Copyright Compliance Form

Before beginning the spreadsheet and database services, all users will need to fill out and return a Copyright Compliance Form and Subscriber license. The form will need to be updated annually for the license to be renewed.
